Security and Your Data

How your data is handled.

Connecting your accounts is the part people think hardest about, and they should. Here is exactly how the connection works, what Lanyard can and cannot do, and what happens to your data.

How the bank connection works

Your bank connection is powered by Plaid, which uses read-only OAuth. It is the same technology behind Venmo, American Express, and most major finance apps. You log in through your bank’s own screen, and Plaid passes Lanyard a read-only view of your transactions and balances.

Plaid never shares your bank login with Lanyard. We see your transactions, not your password.

What Lanyard can and cannot do

✓ Lanyard can

  • Read your transactions and balances
  • Calculate your Momentum Score
  • Spot spending patterns and recurring charges
  • Write your monthly Playbook

✗ Lanyard cannot

  • See or store your bank login or password
  • Move, send, or withdraw money
  • Make purchases or payments
  • Change anything inside your bank accounts

Encryption

Your data is encrypted in transit and at rest. That covers the connection between your bank, Plaid, and Lanyard, and the data once it is stored.

We do not sell your data

We do not sell your data. Ever. Lanyard makes money from your $12 subscription, so we work for you, not for a partner bank or an advertiser. There is no version of the business where selling your data is the plan.

Data deletion

You can cancel any time from your account settings, with no fees and no friction. When you cancel, we delete your financial data, and on request we complete deletion within 30 days.

Questions about your data go to a real person at hello@lanyardmoney.com. For the full legal detail, see our Privacy Policy.
