Notes from Lanyard's Founders

Behind the build — thoughts on money, product, and what we're learning along the way.

What Testing Has Taught Us (And Why Our First Ad Is Live)

There's a moment in building something new when the theory stops and the reality starts. For us, that moment has been testing.

Over the past several weeks, we've been running Lanyard through its paces in ways that aren't glamorous but are absolutely essential. We've built out detailed test profiles, different income levels, different spending habits, different life situations, and we've been asking one simple question over and over again: does this feel true?

Not just accurate. True. There's a difference.

Accurate means the numbers add up. True means when you read the insight, you nod. You recognize your own life in it. You think, yeah, that's exactly right. That's the bar we've set for The Playbook (our flagship monthly report) and testing has made it sharper than I ever expected it would be at this stage.

Here's what we've learned: the details matter more than we anticipated. The way a transaction is categorized. The way a sentence is framed. Whether the coaching feels encouraging or clinical. Small things that compound into a product experience that either feels like a trusted teammate or just another piece of software. We are building the former, and testing has been our proving ground.

I'll be honest, there have been moments where we caught something and said, "that's not right, we have to fix that now." That's the job. That's what this stage is for. Every bug we find and squash before launch is one our future customers never have to experience. I'm proud of the rigor we've brought to the technical side and what we've built together.

Now, here's the news I've also been excited to share this week:

Our first ad is live!

That's right — Lanyard Money is on Instagram. It's our first step toward building an audience of people who want exactly what we're building. More campaigns are coming. The content calendar is being built out. The coach persona is starting to show up in the world and we love engaging with you and hearing about your financial journey. Each one is unique, and we're grateful to be a part of yours.

Launching that first ad felt like turning a key. We're not just building anymore, we're going to market.

I'll close the way I end all our meetings at Lanyard:

What are we missing?
