Notes from Lanyard's Founders

Behind the build — thoughts on money, product, and what we're learning along the way.

First Prototype

This week marked a massive milestone for Lanyard: we officially validated our Proof of Concept (PoC) and transitioned into our first working prototype. Our vision has always been to move beyond simple "spending trackers" and build a proactive personal trainer for your money. We were admittedly a little nervous when we ran our first test to see how the data would flow through the system and if everything that we've been working on for the past few months would work.

And guess what — it was amazing.

What Makes Data Accuracy in Fintech Hard

Building a Personal Finance Management (PFM) tool isn't just about pretty graphs; it's about the backend infrastructure. When we ran our initial set of sandbox data tests, we were primarily focused on the data flows across multiple connected accounts.

During testing, we encountered the "categorization challenge" that plagues many fintech apps. For example, our system initially bucketed a childcare payment as a generic "vendor."

In the world of automated budgeting, "Vendor" isn't good enough. To be a financial trainer, Lanyard needs to understand the intent behind the spend. That's different.

We've already refined our logic to ensure:

  • Accurate Metadata Better identification of recurring personal expenses vs. one-off business costs.
  • Downstream Logic How connecting a new savings account affects your overall financial analysis in the Lanyard platform.

We'll soon be moving from sandbox environments to live data testing to ensure Lanyard is the most responsive, agile financial tool on the market.

What features are you missing in your current banking app?

We're building this for you.
